Food price in France increases for the second month in a row

FXStreet (Mumbai) - The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in France increased by 0.1% in October after having slid to –0.4% in September. Seasonally adjusted, it was also up 0.1%. Consumer prices rose slightly (+0.1%) year-on-year after having stayed stable for two months in a row. Seasonal price increases in fresh foodstuffs and in some services contributed to the rise in CPI in October. The increase in price was however offset by a new decline in energy prices to some extent.

Consumer goods prices were broadly unchanged in supermarkets over a month after a 0.1% decline in September. The prices of consumer goods also fell by 0.4% year on year (after -0.6% in September).

Consumer products, in retail were cheaper than a year earlier (-0.4%). Off retail, consumer products are seen picking up slightly (+ 0.2%) after -0.1% dip in September. The prices of retail products were stable over one year, after -0.2% decline in September 2015 and -0.6% slip in October 2014.

Food price increases

In October, food prices increased by 0.5% for the second month in a row. The food prices increased year-on-year, rising by 1.0% in October after +0.9% in September and +0.8% in August. Fresh foodstuffs, specially fresh fruits became more expensive. The increase in fresh vegetable prices was however more subdued in October (+0.8%). Prices of fresh fishes and seafood were seasonally lower. Excluding unprocessed products, food prices were moderately up in October (+0,1%) due to a slight rebound in prices of meat, milk, cheese and eggs. For the first time since June 2014, food prices, excluding fresh foodstuffs, were higher than one year (+0.1%).

Prices of frequently purchased goods remained unchanged in hyper and supermarkets

In October 2015, prices of frequently purchased goods remained unchanged in hyper and supermarkets month-on-month, after declining 0.1% in September. Prices of frequently purchased goods were less expensive than a year ago (–0.4%). In October 2014, these prices had decreased by 0.8% year-on-year. In large and predominantly food stores, prices of frequently purchased goods decreased also by 0.4% year-on-year (after –0.6% in September). Considering all stores, prices of frequently purchased goods were stable compared with the same month one year ago. Excluding hyper and supermarkets, prices of frequently purchased goods sped up, rising by 0.8% year-on-year in October.

The OPEC monthly report released today showed Saudi Arabia; the biggest exporter of oil, increased its oil supply by 50K barrel in October.
